Camila Mendes and Madelyn Cline have reportedly been cast to portray two of the leads in 2025’s I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot (per Deadline). Mendes, who is best known for her work on the television series Riverdale, and the Outer Banks’ Cline will reportedly join Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers and Jonah Hauer-King in the horror movie reimagining. Director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson's entry in the movie franchise will likely be labeled a legacy sequel, since both Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. are still reportedly “in talks” to return as Julie James and Ray Bronson respectively.
Pidgeon recently starred with Ashley Judd in Lazareth, and her most prolific on-screen work came starring in the television series The Wilds. Withers' TV credits include Tell Me Lies,The Game and Me, while Hauer-King is probably most associated with having played two high-profile roles. The first was as Laurie in the 2017 miniseries adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women and most recently as Prince Eric in The Little Mermaid live-action movie. Hauer-King also portrayed Harry Chase in World on Fire.

In February 2023, the news broke that both Hewitt and Prinze Jr. were “in talks” to reprise the roles they portrayed in both the 1997 classic and its sequel, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (1998). The news came on the heels of the I Know What You Did Last Summer Prime Video series being canceled after only one season. In 2025, the story’s legacy will continue, and the new film will drop some 52 years after author Lois Duncan first wrote the original young adult tale.
I Know What You Did Last Summer’s Legacy
Lois Duncan’s 1973 young adult novel, I Know What You Did Last Summer, was adapted for the big screen in 1997, but the Jennifer Love Hewitt-led film isn’t faithful to its source material. First, the book is a suspenseful YA mystery, and the big-screen version is a slasher flick. Second, while all four characters (Julie, Ray, Barry and Helen) from the novel are in the movie, their fates are quite different on-screen.
Plus, the duality of the Bud/Collie character from the novel was omitted from the 1997 project, and the cool twist revolving around Ray at the end is completely lost on the big screen. Hewitt played Ray’s love interest, Julie, and the actress discussed what returning to the role for a legacy sequel might mean to her. Hewitt said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight:
“It honestly is wild to even think about. If it truly comes together, I don't even know how I'm gonna feel except extremely overwhelmed and grateful. But it's wild to think about. It's nice to know that people are excited at the possibility. I think it would be really fun if it came together.”
Meanwhile, Freddie Prinze Jr. portrayed Ray in the 1997 original and 1998 sequel, and the actor has confirmed that he spoke with I Know What You Did Last Summer (2025) director, Jennifer Kaytin Robinson. Prinze Jr. said in an interview with ComicBook.com:
"Original Films announced that Love [Jennifer Love Hewitt] and I were doing it, but they haven't offered me anything. I sat and met with the director after they made that announcement, which I shouldn't have done by the way. But it happens in our business all the time. I sat with the director, and she pitched me a cool idea. But we'll see like that.”

Prinze Jr. continued:
“I haven't read any script, and I haven't received any offer. I'm just being all cards on the table. I don't believe in being coy and keeping these silly Hollywood secrets anymore. I'm 47 years old. I don't have time for that. The men in my family don't live that long."
